Because it only costs 1 and can counter spells costing up to 4 energy and 1 rainbow rune, it’s strongest in early-to-mid game exchanges, letting reactive decks maintain initiative while developing their board. However, its ceiling is limited—once opponents move into higher-cost win conditions, Defy loses relevance—so hard control lists might prefer broader or unconditional counters if available (such as a higher-cost counter with no energy cap, if the format includes one).
