Protective Sands is best in proactive, board-focused aggro or tempo decks that expect to conquer battlefields early and often, particularly low-curve lists that can spare 1 energy after deploying units and want to convert early victories into card advantage before reaching five runes; it is much weaker in slow control, combo, or expensive midrange decks, since they may not conquer it reliably while the rune restriction is active. It is not necessarily a universally “better” Battlefield than more immediately impactful options—battlefields that provide a stronger combat bonus, a free resource, or a payoff your deck can exploit without paying energy can be preferable—but Protective Sands is a solid generic choice when early card flow is valuable and your deck can consistently trigger it.
