Ivern's archetype is often judged quite harshly, but below you'll find a pretty respectable holding version that can compete at a high level and face many decks in the meta head-on. Let's see how it works!

If you read my other articles, then you know that I heavily prefer holding lists and that I'm a green player. Today, let's discuss another holding list that plays green cards. It was created by someone who I have admired since my Legends of Runeterra days: Marshall. His Holding Ivern is currently the Utrecht Best of Ivern.

Before we begin, however, let me introduce myself. My name is Total, and I used to cast Legends of Runeterra tournaments professionally. I covered all the official tournaments, including Worlds, and I am known for creating deck guides for LoR as well. Now, I am a part of the Riftbound community!

Holding Ivern - Take Control of the Game

This deck is quite different from other holding lists in the format because it doesn't play the entire green control kit. Instead, it plays yellow cards that interact with the legend and a few other control cards.

Overall, this deck is all about Cats, Dogs, Birds & Poros. It plays a few control cards and strong green and yellow options that might not interact with the main game plan because they don't have the right tags but are still essential.

Here's some trivia about Marshall, the player behind this list. He is behind the Riftbound Report Twitter (X) account, manages the Riftbound Discord server, and was one of the most important LoR content creators a few years ago. Because of him, I never run out of things to talk about, so thanks, Marshall!

Main Strategy

Mulligan after any 2-cost unit in your deck.

If you already have one, Mulligan after Frisky Hunter or a hidden card.

Because of your legend's effect, you must always focus on the opponent's battlefield whenever you play your units. Turn their battlefield into a Brush Token and protect it at all costs.

The greatest difference between this deck and other holding lists is that it can be a lot more active and aggressive at the end of the game. You can definitely go for a tie or even surpass your opponent in points later on.

We're talking about Azir - Sovereign, Daisy!, and Emperor's Divide.

Azir is your main way to end the game or force your opponent to fight for their own battlefield and lose some tempo in the process. Even if you lose your attackers this way, you'll often end up ahead if the opponent can't answer you.

Use Ivern - Nurturer early on to create a snowball in terms of value and force your opponent to fight for your battlefield.

This list can't completely counter enemy attacks without Hidden Blade or Back Off. As a result, you need to stack units on one battlefield to get a lot of Might and absorb enemy attacks.

Eventually, you might run out of units, particularly against aggressive decks like Rengar and Diana, which can set up a single unit with a lot of Might.

So, this deck needs Daisy!, Vilemaw, and Vi. With them, you'll fight for the opponent's battlefield and still stay ahead in tempo.

Battlefields

This deck is very versatile and doesn't need a specific battlefield if you're playing first, second, or blind.

All of your battlefields disrupt the opponent in some way.

Forbidding Waste is great in nearly every case if you're going second because it lets you fight for the opponent's battlefield more easily.

Rockfall Path is excellent against LeBlanc when you're going second. With it in play, your opponent won't be able to use her effect.

You'll use Vilemaw's Lair when you're playing blind most of the time. It is particularly strong when you're going second against Rengar, as then it will prevent the opponent from putting pressure on you.

Important Notes

Unlike other holding lists, this one doesn't play Sona, so it is less explosive. Always keep a few Runes ready for your counters and defensive spells so that you can protect your battlefield.

The secret behind this list is knowing exactly when to commit and spend your runes to play one of your units in your base instead of the battlefield you're controlling. That's how you'll threaten your opponent.

You can do this with a Daring Poro and attack with it alongside ambushed Vilemaw or Vi.

Against other holding lists, get Ivern - Friend to All and put it in the champion zone. Like so, you'll be able to score 2 holding points and won't get behind Ahri -Alluring in tempo. Don't forget to always set your Ivern - Friend to All as a Dog.
