Today, we'll explore one of the first Mel lists that have come up. It plays like a slow Diana, but her signature spell ends the game on the spot and makes sure you're never caught off-guard by your opponent.

Today, we'll explore one of the first versions of a new archetype, Mel Rebuttal. This list is pretty similar to Diana lists, but it is a bit slower and more responsive. The main game plan to win involves using the opponent's spells against them.

Let's see how it works.

Mel - Win By Using Your Opponent's Cards Against Them

The main idea behind this list is to control the enemy board with combos that will return units to the opponent's hand or give your units a lot of Might so they can win Showdowns.

This list looks like a worse Diana list, but though it plays half the cards that Diana lists do, it is completely different in action. It is slower and doesn't put as much pressure early on.

That's because you need time and resources to set up your combos. This includes activating Empower, playing Hwei, or not "committing" on plays if you don't have Rebuttal in hand.

Speaking of which, Rebuttal is the main card in this list, and, oftentimes, the main win condition. It is so powerful that it makes up for this version being a slower, "weaker" version of Diana lists.

Rebuttal can change the game instantly. It bounces back enemy spells that usually decide the match, like Punch First, Star Crossed, Falling Star, Rebuke, Sabotage, and any combat trick that costs 4 or less.

With this card in your hand, you can take more risks and not worry about losing the game, as you can essentially use it to turn the game to your favor at any moment.

Important Notes

Please try to keep Patched Porobot in your hand because it is the card you want to discard when you're setting up combos with Hwei. If you discard Poro with Hwei, as it is a Gear/Unit, Hwei will gain +3 Might and also ready two Runes.

Questionable Tome will keep your legend's Empower effect active throughout the entire game. You should play it early on, even if you have to give up pressure to your opponent.

With Questionable Tome, your Empower effects will be active constantly, and you'll also draw cards. Your hand will be full even when you start playing your combos.

Mel - Newly Awakened is relatively more expensive, and most of the time you'll only use her to draw a card. But, against green decks, she is essential. With her, you won't have to struggle against counterspells because her Empower prevents your spells from being countered.

In these matchups, you should only play her in key moments, preferably when you can play her and activate Empower in the same turn.

Gust Monk is an incredible unit. It will both help you fight for your battlefields and prevent your opponent from using their trash pile. If you're facing Kennen, you should use Gust Monk's effect to banish key cards in the opponent's trash pile, like Star Crossed or their signature spell. Like so, you'll prevent them from playing their combo. Considering the upcoming, still developing meta, this card will be extremely important. We'll need it to stop some decks.

Against Holding decks, an interesting idea is using Mel - Defiant Soul in your champion zone to banish enemy units, like Mutated Mouser, any Poro, or Overzealous Fan.

Battlefield Strategy

Threshold of the Gray - This is the battlefield you'll play on blind. It will help you play your combos so that you can fight for it more easily.

Heisho, Shell of the World - This is the battlefield you'll play when you go first. Focus on the enemy battlefield and force your opponent to play their Deflect units on this battlefield so you can remove them later.

Forbidding Waste - This is the battlefield you'll play when you go second. It will help you fight enemy units, even if you started out badly with a slow hand.

Sideboard

Use Turn to Dust when you're facing any Gear deck.

Decree of Insight is essential when you're facing any orange decks.

+1 Gust is important when you're facing decks that play combos with small units, such as any Holding deck, LeBlanc, Azir, and Lillia.

Mel - Defiant Soul is great against Holding lists, as we mentioned before.

Green decks overall usually struggle to answer Rebuke, so it is great against all of them.

Abandon and Hard Bargain are interesting when the opponent's main spell costs more than 4 energy. This includes aggro lists with Lillia and Ornn that play Sprite Burst. It is also great against blue lists that play Singularity, Azir decks (so that you can stop Arise!), and other occasional cards, like Ruination and Time Warp.
