Introduction

Today, we'll explore Azir's "aggro swarm" archetype and the new upgraded versions with Set 3. The build below should remain one of the most competitive in the game, and it is a great way to answer the current meta. Not to mention, it is extremely cheap and accessible, though it is difficult to pilot.

Before we begin, however, let me introduce myself. My name is Total, and I used to cast Legends of Runeterra tournaments professionally. I covered all the official tournaments, including Worlds, and I am known for creating deck guides for LoR as well. Now, I am a part of the Riftbound community!

What makes this list so popular is that it is perhaps the only one that got better and cheaper once Set 3 came out. It is currently the most budget-friendly competitive list in the entire game.

The main game plan didn't change much, but now it has some new tools that noticeably improve the early game and how you perform when you have to focus on holding battlefields.

What Changed

This deck plays 3 Soul Swords and 2 Back Offs.

Because of these cards, your early game is a lot more consistent, as you'll have 9 1-cost equipment cards to play.

You won't be able to use Soul Sword's effect with this deck, but it costs 1, and this already solves one of the main issues with this strategy: you can lose if you can't do anything on turn 1. Now you have this card to play early on and start out on the right foot.

As for Back Off, it is incredibly strong and helps you defend battlefields you intend to hold. It is essential when you play Trifarian Warcamp or when you're focusing on the enemy battlefield with Seat of Power.

Interesting Additions to the Archetype

Here are some cards you can add to this list.

Sacrifice can be extremely useful, as it helps you stay active after you lose a showdown with a Mighty Sand Soldier. You can sacrifice it and use it as a resource to draw cards and ramp for only 1 energy.

This card is pretty flexible, and though it makes this list a bit more difficult, it is often very useful in the hands of experienced players.

Tricksy Tentacles is a great answer to holding decks, particularly because they're usually a bit strong against this strategy. This card lets you move more than one unit, either to force a showdown or simply open space and conquer a battlefield.

Flurry of Feathers is a flexible spell that, despite being expensive, can be extremely useful with your main champion. It can replace the Windwall in your side deck, for instance.

The Ruination can be essential to answer the current meta, which is full of giant units like Baron and Elder Dragon.

Important Notes

You should always play Hall of Legends if you don't know what you're up against, Seat of Power if you didn't start out playing, and Trifarian Warcamp when you do start out playing.

Mulligan for 1-cost equipment cards, and, if possible, keep an Arise! in your opening hand in game 1.

Arise! is a lot less valuable in the following games, after your opponent gets equipment removal. So, against red decks, you should replace at least 2 Arise! with a Windwall or Charm.

Avoid attacking with all your Soldiers at once at critical moments. You can attack with one at a time, wait for them to die, and then attach their equipment to another unit and make your following attacks even stronger.

Death Grip is incredibly strong. With Brutalizer, you can give an unequipped Soldier + 5 Might, killing another Soldier equipped with Brutalizer. Afterward, you equip that Soldier with Brutalizer and give it +8 Might, so it will have 10 Might, for just 2 energy and 2 power (not counting the setup).

En Garde might seem counterintuitive in this list. But remember, you can activate its effect before you pull units with Azir Sovereign as an answer while it is alone in play. This card is also great early on when you need to fight for the enemy battlefield with your Soldiers.
