**Defy** is best suited for tempo or control decks that want cheap, flexible interaction to protect their own game plan or disrupt low-to-mid cost combo and setup plays, especially in slower metas where efficiently trading up on resources matters. Because it only costs 1 and can counter spells costing up to 4 energy and 1 rainbow rune, it’s strongest in early-to-mid game exchanges, letting reactive decks maintain initiative while developing their board. However, its ceiling is limited—once opponents move into higher-cost win conditions, Defy loses relevance—so hard control lists might prefer broader or unconditional counters if available (such as a higher-cost counter with no energy cap, if the format includes one). If a strictly better card exists that counters any spell regardless of cost (for example, a 2-cost unconditional counter), that would generally be stronger in pure control, but Defy’s efficiency and reaction speed make it very playable in tempo-control hybrids.
