About Mel Tokens

Today, we'll discuss the new Mel list, which centers around tokens, removals, and strong setups that answer most meta decks.

Mel Units/Mel Tokens doesn't play Hwei, Brooding Painter, and doesn't look like a slow version of a Diana list. Instead, it's a pretty unique archetype that combines control elements with tokens and interesting ways to approach combat.

Before we begin, however, let me introduce myself. My name is Total, and I used to cast Legends of Runeterra tournaments professionally. I covered all the official tournaments, including Worlds, and I am known for creating deck guides for LoR as well. Now, I am a part of the Riftbound community!

Mel Units - Easy Points, Hard Match

The main idea behind this list is to score 2 points per turn with small units, like the Tentacle tokens created by Up from the Deep and low-cost units.

With many removals and the famous Fizz, Trickster / Star-Crossed combo, you'll be able to dodge attacks and break the opponent's defenses. You'll remove units on battlefields and score points without ever going into combat most of the time.

Your chosen champion also banishes enemy units that have less than 3 Might, which is pretty strong, and it's easy to activate. It activates your legend's effect as well, which makes this deck even more consistent. One of the most important things in this strategy is being able to keep your legend's effect active so that you can use it on enemy units.

Your main unit is Applied Researchers, which will discount the cost of your spells and also activate your legend.

As for your main way to remain active in the game, that's Kha'Zix, Mutating Horror, which can defend you or attack in emergencies. It is a safe way to fight for the battlefields and score points.

Overall, one of the best things about this deck is that you can disrupt your opponent's game plan considerably with Rebuttal. Remember, this card can change the course of the game in your favor completely and force your opponent to give up tempo and lose all the value they get from their strategies.

Main Strategy

Mulligan after any 2-cost unit in your deck.

Don't send back Applied Researchers or Rebuttal when you mulligan. Always keep at least one of these cards if you find it.

Don't attack on turn 2 with your 2-cost unit. Develop another unit and keep your runes to answer anything your opponent does with your spells.

This deck can't defend its non-token units, so you must treat them as an irreplaceable resource.

Summon several tokens with Up from the Deep and control the board by removing enemy units and scoring points. Try to conquer battlefields with your small units.

Please note that you can't play all your units at once on a single battlefield. As we mentioned, this deck can't defend them. So, conquer battlefields with a unit at a time and try to keep your resources in play.

Whenever possible, play Applied Researchers early on and Empower it. This will make setting up certain strategies a lot easier. You'll lose a bit of tempo, but you should win it back with the amount of value this card will create throughout each turn.

On Blind, play Zaun Warrens to cycle through your deck more easily. In these matches, try to always discard your cards with Flow or any extra copies you have in hand.

When you go first, play Seat of Power and focus on the enemy battlefield so that you can draw cards right afterwards. Make sure to conquer it.

When you go second, use Forbidding Waste to make each trade more favorable to you and make sure your tokens can deal with enemy units. This way, you won't have to spend lots of resources to win showdowns.

Important Notes

This deck is a bit difficult to pilot, so try not to get too frustrated. Losing your first few matches with it is normal. You'll need time to get the hang of it.

One secret tip for purple decks overall is to try to get the best card possible with Stacked Deck. Usually, you should get the key cards that make your deck win games, like Applied Researchers or Star-Crossed.

Early on, you shouldn't get cards that only deal with the opponent's board on the spot, like a direct removal like Shock Blast. This list needs to set up Applied Researchers to put its combo in motion.

Cards that deal with the board directly are only interesting to get with Stacked Deck in the mid- to late game, when you have already put in play the units you need to win from your base.

Side Deck

Decree of Insight is great against orange decks because it's incredible against orange Rengar and other units that often turn out to be too big, like Elder Dragon.

Gust Monk is critical against Kennen and other decks that rely on the trash pile, like Akali and Mel herself.

Angler Beast is also strong against Kennen because it can create lots of Tentacles. It's quite powerful against Viktor and Rek'Sai as well and even Darius, so basically all aggro swarm decks.

Turn to Dust destroys Gears, so it's great against Aurora, Fiora, and even Azir and Jayce.

Mel, Newly Awakened is essential against green decks because it protects your spells from counters.

Thousand-Tailed Watcher is strong against Draven and opponents that play lots of units that aren't even that powerful but fill the board fast.
